Your resume is the most important part of your job application, and writing it can seem like a daunting task. To make the process of making a resume easier, many career-focused websites offer a resume maker.
However, each resume builder has different features, so it’s important to find one that works for you.
To help you decide if MyPerfectResume’s builder is right for you, we decided to put it to the test.
MyPerfectResume reviews from customers
MyPerfectResume has supported job seekers in their careers since 2013 by providing resume and cover letter templates as well as job hunting advice.
With a 4.6 rating on Trustpilot, users of MyPerfectResume are generally happy with the services on offer.
The MyPerfectResume builder
Here’s what we learned when trying out the MyPerfectResume builder:
How it works
MyPerfectResume offers an intuitive resume building experience. Like other builders, you start by picking a template that’s appropriate for your industry and follows the resume format you need. You’re then given the option to either upload an existing resume, or start one from scratch.
In the following steps you fill out each of your resume sections until they include all your relevant work experience, skills, and other qualifications.
The last step involves previewing the final result and making any last-minute edits before you download your resume.
What we liked
Just like most of MyPerfectResume’s customers, we found the resume building experience to be easy and straightforward. Here’s what we liked about the builder:
Writing tips and pre-written examples
The MyPerfectResume resume builder offers tips at each step to make the writing process easier. This is helpful if you’re new to the workforce or just need a refresher on what employers look for in a resume.
Another useful feature is the pre-written examples tailored to your job title. If you’re struggling to come up with ideas for bullet points or skills to include, simply type in your job title and you’ll get four recommended examples you can add and adjust to fit your circumstances.
You can change your template at any point
If you realize while assembling your resume that the template you chose doesn’t match your needs, you can change it at any stage. This means you don’t have to go through the trouble of remaking your resume after spending time filling out all your information.
It also makes it easy for you to try out different resume designs before making a final decision.
It’s easy to adjust your resume layout
After you’ve added all your sections and perfected your resume bullet points, you get to see what your finished resume will look like. If you don’t like the layout, you can simply move the resume sections around until you’re happy with the placement.
Thanks to this feature you’re able to choose any template regardless of original format and adjust it to suit your needs.
One downside, however, is that MyPerfectResume’s builder doesn’t indicate where the first page ends and the second one begins, making it difficult to tell whether your resume meets the recommended resume length of one page.
Built-in spell check
Grammar and spelling errors are some of the most common resume mistakes to avoid when putting together your job application. The built-in spell checker in MyPerfectResume’s builder scans your resume and alerts you to any mistakes it detects.
What we didn’t like
While there’s a lot to like about MyPerfectResume’s builder, there’s still room for improvement. Here’s what we didn’t like:
Unhelpful customization options
At the very first step you’re asked how many years of professional experience you have and what country you’re applying for work in. You’re then given template recommendations based on the information you provide.
This could be a useful feature, but we discovered the template recommendations don’t change much depending on what answers you give.
When we tried writing a resume with no experience, we were still recommended templates that emphasized the work experience section of your resume, even though we had nothing to list in it.
No Google Docs templates
There is a page on the MyPerfectResume website for Google Docs resume templates. However, there are no templates specifically designed for use with Google Docs. The page just explains how to use pre-made Google Docs templates.
If you want to use one of MyPerfectResume’s templates with Google Docs, you have to first download it as a Word document and then open it in Google Docs, and many of their templates have formatting issues once opened in GDocs.
Lack of diverse template designs
MyPerfectResume divides its templates into five main categories: Basic, Creative, Professional, Modern, High School.
Here are two examples of templates available on the website, one taken from the Basic category and one from the Creative category:
Basic
Creative
The way MyPerfectResume names its template categories suggests that there’ll be a noticeable difference between the designs, but we thought a lot of their templates looked very similar across each category.
Limited free template options
If you don’t want to use the builder but prefer to download a template, your options are limited to a few designs in each category. You also won’t be able to change the color of the template you choose. To get access to all templates and colors you need to pay for a subscription.
